Deddy PAW
Jakarta Arts Institute
Artist Story
Born in 1963, Deddy studied at Jakarta Arts Institute, School of Design InterStudi, Jakarta and the Pusat Grafika Indonesia. He had a successful career in the media industry before devoting his life to art. His works are based on his research on both the Bible and the Koran alike. In these, he found the apple portrayed not just as a fruit of doom, when the first couple was expelled from paradise, but also of glory, as in the story that tells of the prophet Mohammed’s daughter Fatimah az Zahra being born because of an apple from heaven. He found many other stories that feature the fruit prominently. The ‘enigmatic’ apple then became his metaphor for both universal humanity (love, passion, peace and hope) but also the negative qualities of mankind and the society.
However, Deddy is determined to transform negative energies into positive ones. When he returned to his hometown in 2006, he became aware of the significance of the Borobudur Temple. It inspired the artist to read up on Buddhism and allow the teachings to sink into his consciousness. Since then, many of his paintings have been influenced by the spirit of love and blessings, with Buddha and the apple appearing in configurations that vary from the realistic to the semi-abstract.
